IB Physics HL

IB Physics HL Compared to AP Physics C

Students, particularly in North America, often choose between IB Physics HL and AP Physics C. While both are advanced physics courses, they differ in their curriculum structure, assessment style, and philosophical approach.

IB Physics HL vs. AP Physics C

IB Physics HL AP Physics C
Scope Broad curriculum covering many areas of classical and modern physics. Two separate exams: Mechanics, and Electricity & Magnetism. Deeper, calculus-based focus.
Calculus Primarily algebra and trigonometry based; calculus is not required for the exam. Calculus is integral to the course and is used extensively in problems.
Assessment Multiple papers (multiple choice, short answer, data analysis) plus a large Internal Assessment (IA). Two exams, each with multiple-choice and free-response sections. No required lab component in the final grade.
Duration A two-year course integrated into the IB Diploma Programme. Typically a one-year course, often taken after a foundational physics class.
Emphasis Conceptual understanding, international perspective, and communication of scientific process. Intensive problem-solving and mathematical application of physical principles.

Which Course Is Right for You?

Choose AP Physics C if you are certain about pursuing engineering or physics at a US university and have strong calculus skills. It offers a deep dive into core topics. Choose IB Physics HL if you prefer a broader survey of the field, value the hands-on experience of the Internal Assessment, and are part of the full IB Diploma Programme. Its emphasis on inquiry and communication is a different but equally valuable preparation.
