SAT

SAT Compared

The SAT and the ACT are the two major standardized tests for US college admissions. While they are both widely accepted, they differ in structure, content, and style.

SAT vs. ACT

SAT ACT
Structure Two sections: Reading & Writing, Math. Four sections: English, Math, Reading, Science.
Science Section No dedicated Science section; scientific passages appear in other sections. A separate Science section that tests data interpretation and reasoning.
Math Content Stronger focus on Algebra and data analysis. Calculator allowed on all questions. Broader scope, including more Geometry and Trigonometry. Calculator allowed on all questions.
Time Per Question Generally more time per question, emphasizing critical thinking. Generally less time per question, requiring a faster pace.
Scoring Scored on a scale of 400-1600. Scored on a scale of 1-36.

Which Test Should You Take?

Students who excel at deep reading and data analysis may prefer the SAT. Its structure, with more time per question, rewards careful, methodical problem-solving. The ACT might be a better fit for students who are strong in science and can work quickly and efficiently under time pressure. Since all US colleges accept both scores, the best strategy is to take a practice test for each and see which one you perform better on and feel more comfortable with.
