Common Mistakes in A Level H2 Mathematics

Success in H2 Mathematics often comes from avoiding common pitfalls related to precision, interpretation, and calculator use. Awareness of these errors is the first step to correcting them.

Errors to Avoid

  • Ignoring the required degree of accuracy in final answers. Always give final answers to 3 significant figures unless the question specifies otherwise.
  • Using radian mode for degrees in trigonometry, or vice versa. Check your calculator's mode before every calculation involving trigonometric functions.
  • Failing to define random variables in statistics questions. Clearly state what your variable represents and its distribution, e.g., X ~ N(μ, σ²).
  • Assuming a sample is from a normal population without justification. State that you are using the Central Limit Theorem if n is large and the population is unknown.
  • Forgetting the constant of integration (+C) in indefinite integrals. Make it a habit to add '+C' immediately after performing an indefinite integration.
  • Misinterpreting vector question phrasing like 'from O' or 'relative to O'. Translate vector phrases carefully into mathematical notation, e.g., 'position vector'.
