USAMO Compared to AIME
The AIME and USAMO are sequential exams in the American Mathematics Competitions series, but they test different skills. The AIME is a bridge to the proof-based format of the USAMO.
AIME vs. USAMO
| AIME | USAMO | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | 15 questions in 3 hours | 6 questions in 9 hours over 2 days |
| Answer Style | Integer answers from 0 to 999 | Full written proofs and justifications |
| Primary Skill | Computational speed and ingenuity | Deep reasoning and rigorous argument |
| Scoring | Credit for correct answers only | Partial credit for progress and ideas |
| Purpose | To identify students for USAMO qualification | To select the US International Math Olympiad team |
From Calculation to Creation
The AIME rewards students who are fast and clever at finding a numerical answer. It tests your ability to solve complex problems. The USAMO, however, tests your ability to create a complete mathematical argument from scratch. Students who enjoy not just finding the answer but proving why it must be the only answer will find the USAMO a rewarding challenge. Success on the AIME is the prerequisite for this deeper test of mathematical maturity.
