JEE Advanced 1978 · Laws of Motion

Two cubes of masses m1m_1 and m2m_2 be on two frictionless slopes of block AA which rests on a horizontal table. The cubes are connected by a string which passes over a pulley as shown in the figure. To what horizontal acceleration ff should the whole system (that is blocks and cubes) be subjected so that the cubes do not slide down the planes. What is the tension of the string in this situation?

Written solution

Step 1: Define the forces in the accelerating frame.

Consider the non-inertial reference frame of block AA accelerating horizontally to the right with acceleration ff, where a pseudo-force of magnitude mfmf acts horizontally to the left on each mass.

Step 2: Set up the equation of motion for mass m2m_2.

Balance the forces acting on mass m2m_2 along the slope of angle β\beta.

T=m2(fcos⁡β−gsin⁡β)T = m_2(f\cos\beta - g\sin\beta)

Step 3: Set up the equation of motion for mass m1m_1.

Balance the forces acting on mass m1m_1 along the slope of angle α\alpha.

T=m1(gsin⁡α−fcos⁡α)T = m_1(g\sin\alpha - f\cos\alpha)

Step 4: Solve for the horizontal acceleration ff.

Equate the two expressions for the tension TT.

m2(fcos⁡β−gsin⁡β)=m1(gsin⁡α−fcos⁡α)m_2(f\cos\beta - g\sin\beta) = m_1(g\sin\alpha - f\cos\alpha)

Rearrange the terms to group the acceleration ff on one side.

f(m1cos⁡α+m2cos⁡β)=g(m1sin⁡α+m2sin⁡β)f(m_1\cos\alpha + m_2\cos\beta) = g(m_1\sin\alpha + m_2\sin\beta) f=g(m1sin⁡α+m2sin⁡β)m1cos⁡α+m2cos⁡βf = \frac{g(m_1\sin\alpha + m_2\sin\beta)}{m_1\cos\alpha + m_2\cos\beta}

Step 5: Calculate the tension TT in the string.

Substitute the expression for ff back into the equation for TT.

T=m1(gsin⁡α−[g(m1sin⁡α+m2sin⁡β)m1cos⁡α+m2cos⁡β]cos⁡α)T = m_1\left(g\sin\alpha - \left[\frac{g(m_1\sin\alpha + m_2\sin\beta)}{m_1\cos\alpha + m_2\cos\beta}\right]\cos\alpha\right)

Simplify the expression using the trigonometric identity sin⁡αcos⁡β−cos⁡αsin⁡β=sin⁡(α−β)\sin\alpha\cos\beta - \cos\alpha\sin\beta = \sin(\alpha - \beta).

T=m1m2gsin⁡(α−β)m1cos⁡α+m2cos⁡βT = \frac{m_1 m_2 g \sin(\alpha - \beta)}{m_1\cos\alpha + m_2\cos\beta}

Answer: The required horizontal acceleration is f=g(m1sin⁡α+m2sin⁡β)m1cos⁡α+m2cos⁡βf = \dfrac{g(m_1\sin\alpha + m_2\sin\beta)}{m_1\cos\alpha + m_2\cos\beta} and the tension in the string is T=m1m2gsin⁡(α−β)m1cos⁡α+m2cos⁡βT = \dfrac{m_1 m_2 g \sin(\alpha - \beta)}{m_1\cos\alpha + m_2\cos\beta}.
