Written solution

Given: a⃗=i^+j^+2k^,b⃗=i^+2j^+k^\text{Given: } \vec{a} = \hat{i}+\hat{j}+2\hat{k}, \quad \vec{b} = \hat{i}+2\hat{j}+\hat{k}

c⃗=i^+j^+k^\vec{c} = \hat{i}+\hat{j}+\hat{k}

To find: vector(s) coplanar with a⃗, b⃗ and ⊥c⃗\text{To find: vector(s) coplanar with } \vec{a},\ \vec{b} \text{ and } \perp \vec{c}

v⃗ is coplanar with a⃗, b⃗\vec{v} \text{ is coplanar with } \vec{a},\ \vec{b}

v⃗⊥c⃗  ⟺  v⃗⋅c⃗=0\vec{v} \perp \vec{c} \iff \vec{v}\cdot\vec{c} = 0

Plan: 1. v⃗=a⃗+λb⃗ (coplanar with a⃗,b⃗)\text{Plan: } 1.\ \vec{v} = \vec{a} + \lambda\vec{b} \ \text{(coplanar with } \vec{a},\vec{b}\text{)}

2. Impose v⃗⋅c⃗=0⇒λ2.\ \text{Impose } \vec{v}\cdot\vec{c} = 0 \Rightarrow \lambda

3. Match v⃗ with the options3.\ \text{Match } \vec{v} \text{ with the options}

v⃗=a⃗+λb⃗=(1+λ)i^+(1+2λ)j^+(2+λ)k^\vec{v} = \vec{a} + \lambda\vec{b} = (1+\lambda)\hat{i} + (1+2\lambda)\hat{j} + (2+\lambda)\hat{k}

v⃗⋅c⃗=(1+λ)+(1+2λ)+(2+λ)=0\vec{v}\cdot\vec{c} = (1+\lambda) + (1+2\lambda) + (2+\lambda) = 0

4+4λ=04 + 4\lambda = 0

λ=−1⇒v⃗=a⃗−b⃗\lambda = -1 \Rightarrow \vec{v} = \vec{a} - \vec{b}

v⃗=a⃗−b⃗=(0)i^+(−1)j^+(1)k^\vec{v} = \vec{a} - \vec{b} = (0)\hat{i} + (-1)\hat{j} + (1)\hat{k}

v⃗=−j^+k^\vec{v} = -\hat{j} + \hat{k}

Required vectors form the line w⃗=t(−j^+k^), t∈R\text{Required vectors form the line } \vec{w} = t(-\hat{j}+\hat{k}),\ t \in \mathbb{R}

For every option w⃗⋅c⃗=0⇒test coplanarity\text{For every option } \vec{w}\cdot\vec{c} = 0 \Rightarrow \text{test coplanarity}

(1) j^−k^=b⃗−a⃗=−v⃗ ⇒parallel to v⃗ ✓(1)\ \hat{j}-\hat{k} = \vec{b}-\vec{a} = -\vec{v} \ \Rightarrow \text{parallel to } \vec{v}\ \checkmark

(4) −j^+k^=a⃗−b⃗=v⃗ ⇒parallel to v⃗ ✓(4)\ -\hat{j}+\hat{k} = \vec{a}-\vec{b} = \vec{v} \ \Rightarrow \text{parallel to } \vec{v}\ \checkmark

(2) −i^+j^≠r(a⃗−b⃗),(3) i^−j^≠r(a⃗−b⃗)(2)\ -\hat{i}+\hat{j} \ne r(\vec{a}-\vec{b}), \quad (3)\ \hat{i}-\hat{j} \ne r(\vec{a}-\vec{b})

⇒(2), (3) are not coplanar with a⃗, b⃗ ×\Rightarrow (2),\ (3) \text{ are not coplanar with } \vec{a},\ \vec{b}\ \times

Answer: (1) j^−k^ and (4) −j^+k^\boxed{\text{Answer: } (1)\ \hat{j}-\hat{k} \ \text{and}\ (4)\ -\hat{j}+\hat{k}}
