Let a⃗\vec{a} and b⃗\vec{b} be two unit vectors such that a⃗⋅b⃗=0\vec{a}\cdot\vec{b}=0. For some x,y∈Rx,y\in\mathbb{R}, let c⃗=xa⃗+yb⃗+(a⃗×b⃗)\vec{c}=x\vec{a}+y\vec{b}+(\vec{a}\times\vec{b}). If ∣c⃗∣=2|\vec{c}|=2 and the vector c⃗\vec{c} is inclined at the same angle α\alpha to both a⃗\vec{a} and b⃗\vec{b}, then the value of 8cos⁡2α8\cos^{2}\alpha is ________.

Given: ∣a⃗∣=∣b⃗∣=1,a⃗⋅b⃗=0\text{Given: } |\vec{a}|=|\vec{b}|=1,\quad \vec{a}\cdot\vec{b}=0

c⃗=xa⃗+yb⃗+(a⃗×b⃗),x,y∈R\vec{c}=x\vec{a}+y\vec{b}+(\vec{a}\times\vec{b}),\quad x,y\in\mathbb{R}

∣c⃗∣=2|\vec{c}|=2

To find: 8cos⁡2α\text{To find: } 8\cos^{2}\alpha

∠(c⃗,a⃗)=∠(c⃗,b⃗)=α\angle(\vec{c},\vec{a})=\angle(\vec{c},\vec{b})=\alpha

n⃗=a⃗×b⃗,∣n⃗∣=1,n⃗⊥a⃗, n⃗⊥b⃗\vec{n}=\vec{a}\times\vec{b},\quad |\vec{n}|=1,\quad \vec{n}\perp\vec{a},\ \vec{n}\perp\vec{b}

Plan: (i) write c⃗ in the {a⃗,b⃗,n⃗} frame\text{Plan: (i) write } \vec{c} \text{ in the } \{\vec{a},\vec{b},\vec{n}\} \text{ frame}

(ii) ∣c⃗∣=2⇒x2+y2=3;(iii) equal angles⇒x=y\text{(ii) } |\vec{c}|=2 \Rightarrow x^2+y^2=3;\quad \text{(iii) equal angles} \Rightarrow x=y

(iv) find 8cos⁡2α\text{(iv) find } 8\cos^2\alpha

c⃗=xa⃗+yb⃗+n⃗=xa⃗+yb⃗+(a⃗×b⃗)\vec{c}=x\vec{a}+y\vec{b}+\vec{n}=x\vec{a}+y\vec{b}+(\vec{a}\times\vec{b})

c⃗=(x, y, 1)in the frame {a⃗,b⃗,n⃗}\vec{c}=(x,\ y,\ 1) \quad \text{in the frame } \{\vec{a},\vec{b},\vec{n}\}

∣c⃗∣2=x2+y2+1|\vec{c}|^2 = x^2+y^2+1

(cross terms vanish; ∣a⃗∣=∣b⃗∣=∣n⃗∣=1)(\text{cross terms vanish;} \ |\vec{a}|=|\vec{b}|=|\vec{n}|=1)

∣c⃗∣=2⇒x2+y2+1=4|\vec{c}|=2 \Rightarrow x^2+y^2+1=4

x2+y2=3x^2+y^2=3

cos⁡α=c⃗⋅a⃗∣c⃗∣∣a⃗∣=x2\cos\alpha = \dfrac{\vec{c}\cdot\vec{a}}{|\vec{c}||\vec{a}|} = \dfrac{x}{2}

cos⁡α=c⃗⋅b⃗∣c⃗∣∣b⃗∣=y2\cos\alpha = \dfrac{\vec{c}\cdot\vec{b}}{|\vec{c}||\vec{b}|} = \dfrac{y}{2}

x2=y2⇒x=y\dfrac{x}{2} = \dfrac{y}{2} \Rightarrow x=y

c⃗=x(a⃗+b⃗)+n⃗\vec{c} = x(\vec{a}+\vec{b}) + \vec{n}

⇒projection of c⃗ on the a⃗b⃗-plane is along a⃗+b⃗\Rightarrow \text{projection of } \vec{c} \text{ on the } \vec{a}\vec{b}\text{-plane is along } \vec{a}+\vec{b}

x2+y2=3,x=y⇒2x2=3x^2+y^2=3,\quad x=y \Rightarrow 2x^2=3

x2=32x^2 = \dfrac{3}{2}

cos⁡2α=(x2)2=x24\cos^2\alpha = \left(\dfrac{x}{2}\right)^2 = \dfrac{x^2}{4}

=3/24=38= \dfrac{3/2}{4} = \dfrac{3}{8}

8cos⁡2α=8×38=38\cos^2\alpha = 8 \times \dfrac{3}{8} = 3
