Common Mistakes in Edexcel A Level Mathematics
Awareness of common errors can help you secure marks that others lose. Pay close attention to these specific pitfalls during your revision and in the exam hall.
Calculation and Notation Errors
- Forgetting the constant of integration, '+c'. Always add '+c' immediately after performing an indefinite integration.
- Using degrees instead of radians in calculus with trigonometric functions. Ensure your calculator is in radians mode for any calculus involving sin, cos, or tan.
- Rounding intermediate calculations too early. Store full calculator values and only round your final answer to the required accuracy.
- Misinterpreting vector notation, especially with position vectors vs direction vectors. Clearly distinguish between OA (position vector) and AB (direction vector = OB - OA).
- Confusing the conditions for binomial and normal distributions. Check for a fixed number of trials and constant probability (Binomial) vs a continuous variable (Normal).
- Stating hypotheses incorrectly in hypothesis testing. Write H₀ and H₁ in terms of population parameters (like p or μ), not sample statistics.
- Failing to show sufficient working for 'show that' questions. Provide every logical step clearly, as if the answer were not given in the question.
