Edexcel A Level Mathematics Syllabus
The Edexcel A Level Mathematics qualification covers Pure Mathematics, Statistics, and Mechanics. All three components are assessed across three examination papers.
Pure Mathematics
- Algebra and Functions Covers indices, surds, quadratics, simultaneous equations, inequalities, and graph transformations.
- Coordinate Geometry Includes equations of straight lines and circles in the (x, y) plane.
- Trigonometry Focuses on trigonometric identities, equations, and solving problems in 2D and 3D.
- Differentiation Introduces differentiation from first principles and its application to gradients, tangents, and optimisation.
- Integration Covers indefinite and definite integration, and its use to find areas under curves.
- Vectors Explores the use of vectors in two dimensions for modelling and problem-solving.
Statistics
- Data Presentation Involves interpreting diagrams for single-variable data and using the Large Data Set.
- Probability Includes Venn diagrams, tree diagrams, and understanding mutually exclusive and independent events.
- Statistical Distributions Covers the binomial distribution and its application in modelling real-world situations.
- Hypothesis Testing Introduces the principles of hypothesis testing using the binomial distribution.
Mechanics
- Kinematics Analyses motion in a straight line under constant acceleration using SUVAT equations.
- Forces and Newton's Laws Covers static and dynamic problems, including friction and connected particles.
- Moments Introduces the concept of moments and its application to problems involving rigid bodies.
- Variable Acceleration Uses calculus to model and solve problems where acceleration is not constant.
