IB Mathematics AA

IB Mathematics AA Compared to AI

The IB offers two mathematics courses: Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI). They are designed for different types of students and lead to different university pathways.

Analysis & Approaches vs. Applications & Interpretation

Maths AA Maths AI
Core Focus Abstract concepts, algebraic manipulation, and calculus. Practical application of maths and statistical modelling.
Key Topic Calculus is the central, unifying topic. Statistics and distribution theory are central.
Style Emphasizes proof, rigour, and analytical problem-solving. Emphasizes using technology to model real-world scenarios.
Calculator Use One non-calculator paper, one calculator paper. Calculator is permitted on all papers.
Best For Future maths, engineering, and physical science majors. Future social science, business, and life science majors.
HL Extension Deeper dive into pure maths topics like complex numbers. More advanced statistical tests and graph theory.

Which Course Should You Choose?

Choose Analysis and Approaches (AA) if you enjoy the elegance and challenge of abstract mathematics and intend to study a subject at university that requires strong theoretical maths skills, like engineering or physics. Choose Applications and Interpretation (AI) if your strength is in using mathematics as a tool to solve practical problems and you are more interested in fields like business or psychology. Check the specific requirements of your desired university courses, as many will specify one course over the other.
