IB Mathematics AA Syllabus
The IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches course covers five core topics. Higher Level (HL) students study these topics in greater depth and also cover additional sub-topics.
The Analysis and Approaches syllabus is divided into five topics, which are assessed at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). HL students study all the SL topics in greater depth and are also responsible for a set of additional HL-only sub-topics. The exam papers will draw questions from across this entire range of content, so a comprehensive understanding of each area is necessary for success.
Core Topics (SL and HL)
- Number and Algebra Sequences, series, logarithms, and the binomial theorem.
- Functions Properties of functions, including quadratics, exponentials, and rational functions.
- Geometry and Trigonometry Unit circle trigonometry, triangle rules, and 2D/3D vectors.
- Statistics and Probability Descriptive statistics, probability theory, binomial and normal distributions.
- Calculus Differential and integral calculus, including rules of differentiation and applications.
Additional Higher Level (HL) Topics
- Number and Algebra Proof by induction, complex numbers, and De Moivre's theorem.
- Functions Polynomial properties, factor and remainder theorems, and solving inequalities.
- Geometry and Trigonometry Vector cross product, lines and planes, and inverse trigonometric functions.
- Statistics and Probability Bayes' theorem and properties of probability density functions.
- Calculus Implicit differentiation, integration by parts, and first-order differential equations.
