International Chemistry Olympiad

Preparing for the IChO

Preparation for the IChO is a multi-stage process that builds on a strong foundation of chemistry knowledge with specialized problem-solving skills. A structured approach is essential for success.

A Phased Approach to IChO Preparation

  1. Master Fundamentals Begin by thoroughly understanding all topics in an advanced high school or first-year university chemistry curriculum. Focus on building a strong conceptual base in physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry before moving to specialized Olympiad material.
  2. Study Advanced Topics Work through standard university-level textbooks to cover the depth required for Level 2 and 3 topics. Focus on understanding the theory behind the concepts, not just memorizing facts. Key texts cover physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry in great detail.
  3. Solve Preparatory Problems The host country releases Preparatory Problems before each IChO. These are the most important resource, as they indicate the specific advanced topics and style of questions for that year's competition. Work through them meticulously.
  4. Practice Practical Skills Gain extensive hands-on experience in a laboratory. Practice standard techniques like titration, synthesis, purification, and qualitative analysis. Accuracy, precision, and safety are all evaluated in the practical exam, so consistent practice is necessary.
  5. Simulate Exam Conditions Solve past IChO exams under timed conditions. This builds stamina for the two five-hour exams and helps you develop strategies for managing time and tackling difficult problems. It is important to practice both theoretical and practical papers.

Using Past Papers

Past IChO papers and the preparatory problems are your best guide. They reveal the expected depth of knowledge, the style of questioning, and the emphasis on connecting different areas of chemistry. Do not just read the solutions; try to solve the problems from first principles. Analyze the solutions to understand the thought process and learn alternative approaches. This is how you develop the flexible thinking required for the exam.
