Written solution

R=2,two parallel chords 3+1 apartR=2,\qquad \text{two parallel chords } \sqrt{3}+1 \text{ apart}

central angles πk  and  2πk  (k>0)\text{central angles } \dfrac{\pi}{k}\ \text{ and }\ \dfrac{2\pi}{k}\ \ (k>0)

To find: [k]=greatest integer ≤k\text{To find: } [k] = \text{greatest integer } \le k

1. d=Rcos⁡(θ/2) for a chord at central angle θ1.\ d=R\cos(\theta/2)\ \text{for a chord at central angle }\theta

2. the two chords: angles πk, 2πk2.\ \text{the two chords: angles } \dfrac{\pi}{k},\ \dfrac{2\pi}{k}

3. set the gap =3+1 and solve for k3.\ \text{set the gap } =\sqrt{3}+1 \text{ and solve for } k

cos⁡ ⁣(θ2)=dR ⇒ d=Rcos⁡ ⁣(θ2)\cos\!\left(\dfrac{\theta}{2}\right)=\dfrac{d}{R}\ \Rightarrow\ d=R\cos\!\left(\dfrac{\theta}{2}\right)

R=2 ⇒ d=2cos⁡ ⁣(θ2)R=2\ \Rightarrow\ d=2\cos\!\left(\dfrac{\theta}{2}\right)

d1=2cos⁡ ⁣(π2k)d_1=2\cos\!\left(\dfrac{\pi}{2k}\right)

d2=2cos⁡ ⁣(πk)d_2=2\cos\!\left(\dfrac{\pi}{k}\right)

same side: ∣d1−d2∣≤2<3+1\text{same side: } |d_1-d_2|\le 2 < \sqrt{3}+1

so opposite sides: d1+d2=3+1\text{so opposite sides: } d_1+d_2=\sqrt{3}+1

2cos⁡π2k+2cos⁡πk=3+12\cos\dfrac{\pi}{2k}+2\cos\dfrac{\pi}{k}=\sqrt{3}+1

cos⁡π2k+cos⁡πk=3+12\cos\dfrac{\pi}{2k}+\cos\dfrac{\pi}{k}=\dfrac{\sqrt{3}+1}{2}

k≥2 (since 2πk≤π)k\ge 2\ \left(\text{since } \dfrac{2\pi}{k}\le \pi\right)

cos⁡π6=32,cos⁡π3=12\cos\dfrac{\pi}{6}=\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2},\qquad \cos\dfrac{\pi}{3}=\dfrac{1}{2}

cos⁡π6+cos⁡π3=3+12\cos\dfrac{\pi}{6}+\cos\dfrac{\pi}{3}=\dfrac{\sqrt{3}+1}{2}

f(k)=cos⁡π2k+cos⁡πkf(k)=\cos\dfrac{\pi}{2k}+\cos\dfrac{\pi}{k}

strictly increasing for k≥2 ⇒ k=3 is the unique solution\text{strictly increasing for } k\ge 2 \ \Rightarrow\ k=3 \text{ is the unique solution}

k=3 ⇒ [k]=3k=3\ \Rightarrow\ [k]=3
