JEE Advanced 2022 · System of Particles and Rotational Motion

A flat surface of a thin uniform disk AA of radius RR is glued to a horizontal table. Another thin uniform disk BB of mass MM and with the same radius RR rolls without slipping on the circumference of AA, as shown in the figure. A flat surface of BB also lies on the plane of the table. The center of mass of BB has fixed angular speed ω\omega about the vertical axis passing through the center of AA. The angular momentum of BB is nMωR2nM\omega R^{2} with respect to the center of AA. Which of the following is the value of nn?

Written solution

Step 1: Determine the distance and velocity of the center of mass of disk BB.

Since both disks have radius RR and touch externally, the distance from the center of disk AA (point OO) to the center of disk BB is:

d=R+R=2Rd = R + R = 2R

The center of mass of BB moves in a circle of radius 2R2R with angular speed ω\omega about OO, giving a tangential speed of:

v=2Rωv = 2R\omega

Step 2: Find the spin angular speed of disk BB.

Since disk BB rolls without slipping on the fixed disk AA, the contact point is instantaneously at rest.

v=ωBRv = \omega_B R

Substitute v=2Rωv = 2R\omega to find the spin angular speed ωB\omega_B of disk BB about its own center:

2Rω=ωBR2R\omega = \omega_B R ωB=2ω\omega_B = 2\omega

Step 3: Calculate the spin angular momentum of disk BB.

The moment of inertia of the uniform disk BB about its center of mass is:

Icm=12MR2I_{\text{cm}} = \frac{1}{2}MR^2

The spin angular momentum about its center of mass is:

Lspin=IcmωBL_{\text{spin}} = I_{\text{cm}}\omega_B Lspin=(12MR2)(2ω)L_{\text{spin}} = \left(\frac{1}{2}MR^2\right)(2\omega) Lspin=MR2ωL_{\text{spin}} = MR^2\omega

Step 4: Calculate the orbital angular momentum of disk BB.

The orbital angular momentum of the center of mass of BB about the center of AA is:

Lorb=M(2R)2ωL_{\text{orb}} = M(2R)^2\omega Lorb=4MR2ωL_{\text{orb}} = 4MR^2\omega

Step 5: Find the total angular momentum and determine nn.

The total angular momentum LOL_O of disk BB with respect to the center of AA is the sum of its spin and orbital angular momenta:

LO=Lspin+LorbL_O = L_{\text{spin}} + L_{\text{orb}} LO=MR2ω+4MR2ωL_O = MR^2\omega + 4MR^2\omega LO=5MR2ωL_O = 5MR^2\omega

Comparing this with the given expression LO=nMωR2L_O = n M \omega R^2:

n=5n = 5

Answer: n=5n = 5
