Written solution

A = 0 1 c 1 a d 1 b e , a,b,c,d,e ∈ {0,1}

∣A∣=det⁡(A)∈{−1,1}|A| = \det(A) \in \{-1, 1\}

To find: ∣S∣ where S={A:a,b,c,d,e∈{0,1}, det⁡A=±1}\text{To find: } |S| \text{ where } S = \{A : a,b,c,d,e \in \{0,1\},\ \det A = \pm 1\}

det⁡A=0−1(e−d)+c(b−a)=d−e+c(b−a)\det A = 0 - 1(e - d) + c(b - a) = d - e + c(b - a)

c=0:det⁡A=d−e=±1  ⟺  (d,e)=(1,0) or (0,1)c = 0:\quad \det A = d - e = \pm 1 \iff (d,e) = (1,0) \text{ or } (0,1)

count=2×2×2=8\text{count} = 2 \times 2 \times 2 = 8

c=1:det⁡A=(d−e)+(b−a)=x+yc = 1:\quad \det A = (d - e) + (b - a) = x + y

x=d−e,y=b−a,x,y∈{−1,0,1}x = d - e,\qquad y = b - a,\qquad x, y \in \{-1,0,1\}

x+y=1: (0,1)→2, (1,0)→2 ⇒ 4x+y = 1:\ (0,1)\to 2,\ (1,0)\to 2 \ \Rightarrow\ 4

x+y=−1: (0,−1)→2, (−1,0)→2 ⇒ 4x+y = -1:\ (0,-1)\to 2,\ (-1,0)\to 2 \ \Rightarrow\ 4

count=4+4=8\text{count} = 4 + 4 = 8

∣S∣=8+8=16|S| = 8 + 8 = 16

∣S∣=16\boxed{|S| = 16}
