The BITS Admission Test (BITSAT) is a computer-based entrance examination for admission to the integrated first-degree programmes at the various campuses of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS). It is taken by students who have completed their 12th-grade education with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as their core subjects. The score obtained in BITSAT is the primary criterion for securing a place in the institute's engineering, science, and pharmacy courses.

The exam tests a candidate's knowledge in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, along with their proficiency in English and Logical Reasoning. All questions are multiple-choice. The paper is designed to evaluate not only a student's understanding of concepts but also their speed, accuracy, and ability to perform under pressure.

The practical difficulty of BITSAT comes from its demanding pace. Candidates have to solve a large number of questions in a limited time, and there is a penalty for incorrect answers, which discourages blind guessing. The syllabus is broad, requiring a thorough preparation of the entire Class 11 and 12 curriculum. Success depends heavily on quick problem-solving skills and effective time management during the test.

JEE Advanced 2019

A block of mass 2M2M is attached to a massless spring with spring-constant kk. This block is connected to two other blocks of masses MM and 2M2M using two massless pulleys and strings. The acceleration of the blocks are a1a_1, a2a_2 and a3a_3 as shown in the figure. The system is released from rest with the spring in its unstretched state. The maximum extension of the spring is x0x_0. Which of the following option(s) is/are correct? [gg is the acceleration due to gravity. Neglect friction]

Step 1: Establish the string constraint relation.

Let xx be the displacement of the block of mass 2M2M (attached to the spring) to the right. As this block moves right by xx, the movable pulley P2P_2 moves down by xx. Let yMy_M and y2My_{2M} be the downward displacements of the blocks of mass MM and 2M2M respectively.

The length of the string passing over P2P_2 is constant, which gives:

yM+y2M=2xy_M + y_{2M} = 2x

Differentiating twice with respect to time:

a2+a3=2a1a_2 + a_3 = 2a_1

Rearranging this relation:

a2−a1=a1−a3a_2 - a_1 = a_1 - a_3

This shows that Option 4 is correct.

Step 2: Analyze the forces and tensions.

Let TT be the tension in the string connecting the blocks of mass MM and 2M2M. Since the pulley P2P_2 is massless, the tension TuT_u in the upper string connected to the block of mass 2M2M on the table is:

Tu=2TT_u = 2T

For the block of mass 2M2M on the table, the equation of motion is:

2Ma1=Tu−kx2M a_1 = T_u - kx 2Ma1=2T−kx2M a_1 = 2T - kx

Step 3: Determine the tension TT using the frame of the movable pulley.

In the accelerating frame of pulley P2P_2 (which has downward acceleration a1a_1), the effective acceleration due to gravity is:

geff=g−a1g_{\text{eff}} = g - a_1

The equations of motion for the hanging blocks of mass MM and 2M2M relative to the pulley are:

M(g−a1)−T=MarelM(g - a_1) - T = M a_{\text{rel}} 2M(g−a1)−T=−2Marel2M(g - a_1) - T = -2M a_{\text{rel}}

Multiplying the first equation by 2 and adding it to the second equation to eliminate arela_{\text{rel}}:

4M(g−a1)−3T=04M(g - a_1) - 3T = 0 T=4M3(g−a1)T = \frac{4M}{3}(g - a_1)

Step 4: Find the acceleration a1a_1 as a function of xx.

Substitute the expression for TT into the equation of motion for the block on the table:

2Ma1=8M3(g−a1)−kx2M a_1 = \frac{8M}{3}(g - a_1) - kx 14M3a1=8Mg3−kx\frac{14M}{3} a_1 = \frac{8Mg}{3} - kx a1=4g7−3k14Mxa_1 = \frac{4g}{7} - \frac{3k}{14M}x

Step 5: Determine the maximum extension x0x_0.

Rewrite the equation of motion in the standard form of simple harmonic motion:

a1=−3k14M(x−8Mg3k)a_1 = -\frac{3k}{14M}\left(x - \frac{8Mg}{3k}\right)

This represents simple harmonic motion with:

ω2=3k14M\omega^2 = \frac{3k}{14M} xeq=8Mg3kx_{\text{eq}} = \frac{8Mg}{3k}

Since the system is released from rest at x=0x = 0, the amplitude of oscillation is A=xeqA = x_{\text{eq}}. The maximum extension x0x_0 is:

x0=2xeq=16Mg3kx_0 = 2x_{\text{eq}} = \frac{16Mg}{3k}

Since 16Mg3k≠4Mgk\frac{16Mg}{3k} \neq \frac{4Mg}{k}, Option 2 is incorrect.

Step 6: Evaluate the acceleration at x=x04x = \frac{x_0}{4}.

Substitute x=x04=4Mg3kx = \frac{x_0}{4} = \frac{4Mg}{3k} into the expression for a1a_1:

a1=4g7−3k14M(4Mg3k)a_1 = \frac{4g}{7} - \frac{3k}{14M}\left(\frac{4Mg}{3k}\right) a1=2g7a_1 = \frac{2g}{7}

Since 2g7≠3g10\frac{2g}{7} \neq \frac{3g}{10}, Option 1 is incorrect.

Step 7: Evaluate the speed at x=x02x = \frac{x_0}{2}.

At x=x02=xeqx = \frac{x_0}{2} = x_{\text{eq}}, the block is at its equilibrium position, where its speed vv is maximum:

v=ωxeqv = \omega x_{\text{eq}} v=3k14M⋅8Mg3kv = \sqrt{\frac{3k}{14M}} \cdot \frac{8Mg}{3k} v=g32M21kv = g\sqrt{\frac{32M}{21k}}

Since g32M21k≠3gM5kg\sqrt{\frac{32M}{21k}} \neq 3g\sqrt{\frac{M}{5k}}, Option 3 is incorrect.

Answer: The only correct option is a2−a1=a1−a3a_2 - a_1 = a_1 - a_3.
