Singapore Mathematical Olympiad

SMO Compared to the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC)

The SMO and the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) are both prestigious contests, but they differ in structure, scope, and progression. Students in Singapore often encounter both.

SMO vs. AMC Series

SMO AMC Series (AMC/AIME)
Structure Three age-based sections (Junior, Senior, Open), each with two rounds. A single path: AMC 10/12 leads to AIME, which leads to USA(J)MO.
Question Format Round 1 is short answer; Round 2 requires full written proofs. Both AMC and AIME are short-answer competitions with integer answers.
Syllabus Focus Strong emphasis on classical geometry and number theory proofs in Round 2. Broader range of combinatorics and algebra; proofs only appear at the final national stage.
Progression Top performers from Round 1 qualify for Round 2 within the same year. Top performers on the AMC qualify for the AIME, a separate exam held weeks later.
Primary Audience Students studying in Singapore. Students in the US, but open to international participation.

Which Competition is Right for You?

Students in Singapore should prioritize the SMO as it is the national olympiad and the primary selection tool for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) team. The AMC series is excellent for additional practice and international exposure. Its integer-answer format tests speed and accuracy, complementing the proof-writing skills developed for SMO Round 2.
