Preparing for the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO)

Success in the SMO requires a structured approach that builds problem-solving skills over time. Preparation involves mastering theory and then applying it to contest-style problems.

A Structured Preparation Plan

  1. Master the Fundamentals Ensure a strong grasp of your school's mathematics curriculum. A solid foundation in algebra and geometry is essential before moving to advanced olympiad topics, as these concepts are frequently used in more complex problems.
  2. Study Olympiad Topics Systematically work through the main olympiad areas: number theory, combinatorics, advanced algebra, and Euclidean geometry. Use dedicated olympiad training books or resources that cover these topics with sufficient depth and rigor.
  3. Solve Topic-Wise Problems After learning a new concept, solve many problems related to that specific topic. This practice helps you recognize patterns and apply standard techniques efficiently when you encounter them in a mixed-problem setting.
  4. Attempt Full Past Papers Once you are comfortable with individual topics, begin solving full SMO past papers under timed conditions. This simulates the exam environment, improves your speed, and helps you learn to manage time across questions of varying difficulty.
  5. Analyze and Review After each practice paper, carefully review your mistakes and identify weak areas. Go back to the theory for topics where you struggled and try similar problems to reinforce your understanding and correct your errors.

Using Past SMO Papers

Past papers are the most accurate guide to the exam's style and difficulty. The SMO Round 1 has short-answer questions, while Round 2 requires full, rigorous proofs. Practice both formats. Pay attention to how questions are framed and the level of detail expected in Round 2 solutions. The Singapore Mathematical Society website is the official source for these papers.
