JEE Advanced 2009 · Thermal Properties of Matter

A metal rod ABAB of length 10x10x has its one end AA in ice at 0∘C0^\circ\text{C}, and the other end BB in water at 100∘C100^\circ\text{C}. If a point PP on the rod is maintained at 400∘C400^\circ\text{C}, then it is found that equal amounts of water and ice evaporate and melt per unit time. The latent heat of evaporation of water is 540 cal/g540\,\text{cal/g} and latent heat of melting of ice is 80 cal/g80\,\text{cal/g}. If the point PP is at a distance of λx\lambda x from the ice end AA, find the value of λ\lambda. [Neglect any heat loss to the surrounding.]

Written solution

Step 1: Define the lengths of the rod segments.

The point PP divides the rod ABAB of length 10x10x into two segments.

AP=λxAP = \lambda x PB=(10−λ)xPB = (10 - \lambda)x

Step 2: Calculate the temperature differences across each segment.

The temperature differences from point PP to the ends AA and BB drive the heat flow.

ΔTA=400∘C−0∘C=400∘C\Delta T_A = 400^\circ\text{C} - 0^\circ\text{C} = 400^\circ\text{C} ΔTB=400∘C−100∘C=300∘C\Delta T_B = 400^\circ\text{C} - 100^\circ\text{C} = 300^\circ\text{C}

Step 3: Express the rate of heat flow through each segment.

Apply the thermal conduction formula for each segment, where kk is the thermal conductivity and AA is the cross-sectional area.

QA=400kAλxQ_A = \frac{400 kA}{\lambda x} QB=300kA(10−λ)xQ_B = \frac{300 kA}{(10 - \lambda)x}

Step 4: Equate the mass rates of phase change.

The rate of ice melting at AA equals the rate of water evaporating at BB.

QALmelt=QBLevap\frac{Q_A}{L_{\text{melt}}} = \frac{Q_B}{L_{\text{evap}}} QA80=QB540\frac{Q_A}{80} = \frac{Q_B}{540}

Step 5: Solve for the parameter λ\lambda.

Substitute the heat flow expressions into the mass rate equation and simplify.

400kA80λx=300kA540(10−λ)x\frac{400 kA}{80 \lambda x} = \frac{300 kA}{540 (10 - \lambda)x} 5λ=59(10−λ)\frac{5}{\lambda} = \frac{5}{9(10 - \lambda)} 9(10−λ)=λ9(10 - \lambda) = \lambda 90−9λ=λ90 - 9\lambda = \lambda 10λ=9010\lambda = 90 λ=9\lambda = 9

Answer: λ=9\lambda = 9
