Written solution

Let α, β be the roots of the equation x² - px + r = 0 and α/2, 2β be the roots of the equation x² - qx + r = 0. Then the value of r is

α,β: roots of x2−px+r=0\alpha, \beta:\ \text{roots of } x^2 - px + r = 0

α2, 2β: roots of x2−qx+r=0\dfrac{\alpha}{2},\ 2\beta:\ \text{roots of } x^2 - qx + r = 0

To find: the value of r\text{To find: the value of } r

Both equations have the same constant term r\text{Both equations have the same constant term } r

Use sum and product of roots (Vieta)\text{Use sum and product of roots (Vieta)}

α+β=p\alpha + \beta = p

αβ=r\alpha\beta = r

α2+2β=q\dfrac{\alpha}{2} + 2\beta = q

α2⋅2β=r\dfrac{\alpha}{2} \cdot 2\beta = r

α2⋅2β=αβ⇒same r\dfrac{\alpha}{2}\cdot 2\beta = \alpha\beta \Rightarrow \text{same } r

Two equations in α,β:\text{Two equations in } \alpha, \beta:

α+β=p\alpha + \beta = p

α2+2β=q\dfrac{\alpha}{2} + 2\beta = q

α=p−β\alpha = p - \beta

p−β2+2β=q\dfrac{p - \beta}{2} + 2\beta = q

p2−β2+2β=q\dfrac{p}{2} - \dfrac{\beta}{2} + 2\beta = q

p2+3β2=q\dfrac{p}{2} + \dfrac{3\beta}{2} = q

3β2=q−p2\dfrac{3\beta}{2} = q - \dfrac{p}{2}

β=2q−p3\beta = \dfrac{2q - p}{3}

α=p−β=p−2q−p3\alpha = p - \beta = p - \dfrac{2q-p}{3}

α=2(2p−q)3\alpha = \dfrac{2(2p - q)}{3}

r=αβ=2(2p−q)3⋅2q−p3r = \alpha\beta = \dfrac{2(2p-q)}{3}\cdot\dfrac{2q-p}{3}

r=29(2p−q)(2q−p)r = \dfrac{2}{9}(2p-q)(2q-p)

α+β=2(2p−q)+(2q−p)3=p ✓\alpha + \beta = \dfrac{2(2p-q) + (2q-p)}{3} = p\ \checkmark

α2+2β=2p−q+2(2q−p)3=q ✓\dfrac{\alpha}{2} + 2\beta = \dfrac{2p-q + 2(2q-p)}{3} = q\ \checkmark

r=29(2p−q)(2q−p)\boxed{r = \dfrac{2}{9}(2p-q)(2q-p)}
